I am the strange kind of human who LOVES goals. I love tracking them, re-evaluating them, and completing them. I also enjoy crossing things off my list when I no longer feel the drive or desire to complete them, which is totally cool, btw! I often see that New Year’s resolutions get a bad rep, and I get it. A lot of people (including the old me) make too many crazy, new, and ambitious goals that are often overwhelming. Ambition is good, but when we set our sights on a grand outcome that will take a lot of time to accomplish, we tend to get burnt out. This is why people dump their resolutions pretty quickly and why everyone makes fun of them.
I also hear the debate that people “shouldn’t need a new year to set goals”. While I understand the premise behind that statement, I also think that calendar dates can be a very useful tool in re-evaluating what we want, where we are at, and steps to change course. I think this can be done each new morning, new week, new month, etc. The New Year or new moon cycle or whatever it is that motivates you to seek change, I say go for it and f*ck the haters!
That being said, I do want to share with you a new habit I picked up a few years back from Ali Edwards: One Little Word. Rather than a list of ambitious resolutions, Edwards decided that each January she would pick a new word to focus on, meditate on, and reflect upon throughout the year. It is a word that gives direction for your year and what you envision accomplishing. I highly suggest you look into Edward’s site and research other bloggers who swear by “word of the year”.
In 2014, I chose the word GROWTH. It was my first year teaching yoga, building new friendships outside of my normal bubble, and I spent the year dedicating my free time to self-development. In 2015, I chose the word NOURISH. It was a tough year, but I always brought my focus back to my needs and what I needed to surround myself to feel nourished. My relationships with the people who support me deepened immensely and I have a solid understanding for how to respond to feelings of overwhelm and burnout.
For 2017, I am so excited for the fun and funky word I chose to guide me: FRESH. Now, I know what you’re thinking… and no, I am not trying to bring back cool ‘90’s swag/lingo. (well, perhaps a teeny part of me is humored by naming myself the “Fresh Princess of Copa”… no? lol) I am excited for a fresh start, fresh connections, fresh explorations. I am hoping to bring even more fresh food into my life, wake up feeling refreshed each morning, and take a fresh outlook every day. And, let’s be honest… I am ready to feel fresh and SLAY!
What are you eager for in the New Year? I would love to chat with you about ways to implement your goals and share tools for finding a word of your own.
Much love! And thank you for a FUN 2016! (check out the slideshow below)
